Local History Room
The Rio Rancho Local History Collection
 The Rio Rancho Local History Collection has developed over several years and continues to grow with donations of books, posters, flyers, and memorabilia from generous community members. The collection contains items dating back to 1962 and is housed in the Local History Room located near the Adult Information Desk in the southeast corner of the library.

Exhibits
Exhibits including photographs, maps, posters, and other items are on display in the Local History Room.
Oral histories
The library conducts interviews with individuals who have Rio Rancho stories to share. The oral histories are available in the Local History Room. In the future, the library plans to digitize the collection and make the oral histories available online.
Books & Collections
Books, manuscripts, videotapes, posters, flyers, and other materials in the Local History Room cover topics such as Rio Rancho history, current and past demographics, and other local statistics. Included are Rio Rancho High School yearbooks and books written by Rio Rancho authors.
Local Newspapers
The collection includes microfilm, microfiche, CDs of two local newspapers, the Rio Rancho Observer (1973 to 2008 on microfilm and 2009 to present on CD), and the Rio Rancho Roadrunner (1975 to 1981 on microfiche). Patrons may use the microform reader located outside the Local History Room during normal library hours. Patrons may use public PCs to view the CDs. If you need one of our microforms or CDs, please go to the Adult Information Desk for assistance.
Preservation
Owing to the nature of the collection, local history items may not be checked out. The collection is secured in locked cabinets in the temperature-controlled Local History Room. Please be aware that some items require special handling, including wearing gloves. If required, gloves will be supplied.
Donations
We welcome donations to the Local History Collection relating to the history of Rio Rancho. Acceptable donations include photographs, books, yearbooks, old phone books, posters, flyers, papers, and other memorabilia. Please contact the local history librarian for more information.
Research
The Local History Room is locked during regular library hours. Books and other materials are listed in the library catalog, identified with the location Loma Colorado Local History. If you would like to use materials or see the collection, an adult information librarian will be able to assist you. You will be required to leave your ID or library card at the Adult Informatin Desk while you conduct your research.
