The Traffic Section has two primary areas of responsibility: Traffic Engineering and Traffic Operations and Maintenance.
Traffic Engineering: This section oversees evaluation of and improvements to existing and planned traffic related infrastructure on City streets. This includes but is not limited to traffic signals, street lighting, traffic signing (regulatory, warning and guide signing) and roadway markings. Studies conducted include traffic counts and speed volume studies. Transportation planning is also another area of focus for this section.
Traffic Maintenance: This section is responsible for the maintenance of all traffic signals, school flashers, street lights, signs and traffic markings within the City of Rio Rancho. PNM is responsible for bulb maintenance on unmetered (residential) lighting circuits within the City. Striping and street signing on Paseo del Volcan (NM 347), the Pat D’Arco Highway (NM 528) and US 550 are the responsibility of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Street lighting and traffic signals on these state routes are maintained by the City of Rio Rancho.
